Australian Young Rider Team Announced for Borrowed Horse Event in New Zealand
The competition will take place from 27th – 29th January 2023 at Larsens Showjumping Championships, Gisborne, New Zealand.
The Trans-Tasman challenge is an annual event hosted by New Zealand welcoming friendly competition and the opportunity for Young Riders to experience representing their country as part of a team. The event has traditionally seen an exciting battle between the nations in a display of skill and horsemanship.
The competition will take place on borrowed horses, provided by the New Zealand team, which introduces the additional challenge for the riders of competing on an unfamiliar horse over a course of 1.20m in height.
Australia last won the event in 2017 and the excitement is building as this year’s team prepare to make the journey across the ditch in an attempt to regain the title.
Chair of the National Jumping Selection Panel, Graeme Watts, said that the depth of Australia’s talent pool is overwhelming and offers a promising future for the sport.
“It was unbelievable to see 61 expressions of interest submitted for this event, which shows the depth of talent we have in this country. All of the applications were of outstanding quality making the selectors job of naming only four riders difficult. The National Jumping Selectors would like to wish the four Young Riders the best of luck for the competition ahead in New Zealand, where we have no doubt they will make Australia proud.”
Congratulations to the selected riders.
