Two days of wonderfully competitive jumping were conducted at the Nowra Showground over the weekend. While most of the Nowra Agricultural Show had to be postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, fortunately for the Jumping community on the NSW South Coast, the Jumping program was able to proceed under strict hygiene protocols.

After a wet Saturday, conditions on Sunday were much improved and the feature class of the weekend was held under bright blue skies with a cooling breeze that did not affect the competition, but kept the small band of spectators comfortable.

The Grand Prix start list may have only had 13 combinations listed, however it was a field full of class. The 2016 Australian World Cup Series winner, Clint Beresford, was there, along with the 2018 Series winner, Aaron Hadlow. They were joined by the 2019 NSW Senior Champion, Jamie Priestley and the 2019 NSW Junior Champion, Anneliese Wansey. Also present were the super-experienced James Arkins who entered with three horses and Stephen Dingwall who travelled across to the coast from Murrumbateman, near Canberra, to compete. As if all that was not enough, we also had the pleasure of seeing Australian jumping legend and multi Australian Olympic representative Vicki Roycroft who had two horses entered and had travelled down from her Central Coast home, to show the youngsters how it is done.

The class was conducted under World Cup rules, which the judge explained before the start of the class. There would be two rounds with all first round clears invited back to the second round. If there were less than eight clear first rounds, then the best eight first round performances would be invited to participate in round 2, with round 1 faults being carried forward.

At the conclusion of Round 1 there were five clear rounds achieved by Clint Beresford and Emmaville Dontango, James Arkins and his stallion Eurostar, Jamie Priestley and Courage, Aaron Hadlow and Vahlinvader and the quickest of them all in just 73.72 seconds, Vicki Roycroft and Licaviv. A couple of combinations did not back-up for Round 2, which saw these five combinations being joined by Vicki Roycroft and Dynamite Bay in the fight for the title.

Roycroft and Dynamite Bay were the first combination out in Round 2 and they showed the rest of the field around the course, clear in 40.01 seconds to finish with a total of 4 faults and put the pressure squarely on the rest of the combinations to come.

Clint Beresford and Emmaville Dontango were next, but a couple of rails and a time penalty put paid to their chances. Third pair out were James Arkins and Eurostar, who travelled some very tight lines near the end of their round and went clear in 35.61 seconds to take the lead and set a standard that would prove difficult to eclipse. Fourth combination out were the Nowra based combination of Jamie Priestley and Courage who took an early rail to also give them a total of 4 faults.

The next combination to try and take the lead off Arkins was Aaron Hadlow and Vahlinvader. They managed a clear round, however a time just 0.62 seconds slower, meant they settled into second for the time being.

The last combination to take a tilt for victory were Vicki Roycroft and Licaviv. They, unfortunately, only managed to negotiate the first two fences before taking a rail, however, that was their only issue and they finished on a total of 4 faults, in a time almost a second slower than Roycroft earlier recorded with Dynamite Bay.

So when the dust settled, James Arkins and Eurostar were at the top of the leaderboard with zero faults, just ahead of Aaron Hadlow and Vahinvader, also double clear. Third place went to Vicki Roycroft and Dynamite Bay, who just pipped herself and Licaviv into fourth place.
