Australian Jumping Championships – Day 2 Wrap

The 2024 Australian Jumping Championships continued today at the Willinga Park Equestrian Centre at Bawley Point on the NSW South Coast. The second day of competition was just as good as the first as we work towards a weekend packed with finals.

The first class today on the main arena was the Trailrace Saddlery second round of the Australian Young Rider Championship. Jack Barker who was placed third and fourth yesterday behind Charlie Magnier, reversed the tables on Charlie to take out the win today, aboard Cornets Prinzess. They were the only clear combination which meant that no jump off was necessary to determine the winners. Claiming second place, just as they did yesterday, were Charlie Magnier and Notre Dame De Bourguignon, with Jack Barker and Tulara Colchic coming in third. The pair of seconds by Charlie and Notre Dame De Bourguignon in the two rounds, means that they will go into Saturday’s final in the lead, starting with zero penalties.

Remarkably, as in the Young Rider competition the Seniors also saw the second placed combination on Round 1 take out the win today in Round 2. Phillip Lever and Billionaire NZPH went one better to take the win today with a fast double clear performance. They finished in 44.99 seconds, beating home the other two double clear performances by Josh Collins and Cornel (47.40 seconds) and Gemma Creighton and Dada Des Brimbelles Z (48.10 seconds). Phillip Lever and Billionaire NZPH will go into Saturday’s final carrying zero penalties.

The next class on the main arena was the first round of the MRX Children’s Championship. Competed for over a single round, the class went to the fastest clear, achieved by Amy Thomson and Rosthwaite Freddy Flintstone. The finished in 63.00 seconds flat, to beat home Harley McNaughton and Glenbrooke Archie Bunker in second place (63.90 seconds) and Grace Vassallo aboard Just Peachy in third (68.31 seconds). The children will open proceedings on Arena 1 tomorrow when they have their second round.

Other action on the main arena consisted of a 1.30m class divided into a Young Horse and an Open section. The Unicornium Young Horse class was won by Chris Chugg and mare Oaks Ella, while Chris also won the Redleaf Lodge Open class, aboard his gelding, CF Comanche.

As it did yesterday, the action on the main arena wrapped up with a Riders’ Cup class, today over 1.45m. There were just three clear rounds out of a start list of 25 combinations and these three had the podium to themselves. Fastest of the three was Emma Collins aboard Oaks Abracadabra in a time of 74.71 seconds. Kate Hinschen and Calouandra PS were second, finishing in 76.20 seconds with yesterday’s seventh placed Amelia Douglass and Quel Filou 16 improving today to finish third in a steady 83.69 seconds.

On the Yandoo Equestrian Services Arena 2, there were five classes decided. The first three classes were all over 1.00m with the Tom Smith Farrier Adult class going to Charlotte Inglis and Capulet Ego Z with a fast clear performance. The Tom McDermott sponsored Junior class went to the Victorian combination of Porscha Polkinghorne and Devereaux Sea Salt, producing the fastest of 15 clear rounds. In the Ouverture Sport Horses Young Horses class, the Queensland combination, of Courtney Scott and the young chestnut mare Mira, were victorious after having won a similar class on Day 1 of competition.

The Arena two action wrapped up with a 1.15m single round class divided into Open and Young Horse divisions. The Red Fox Lodge Open class was taken out by another day 1 winning combination: Lori James and Restauranter SHP with over two seconds to spare to their nearest rival. In the 1.15 Young Horse class, also sponsored by Red Fox Lodge, the win went to Michael Short and Belle Phlynn Park Calisto almost 3.5 seconds clear of the second placed combination.
