Clint Beresford clinches second World Cup victory of the season
The third leg of the 2018/19 Australian World Cup Qualifying season was held today in Adelaide as part of the Royal Adelaide Show. Clint Beresford, riding Emmaville Jitterbug took the maximum points on offer after an exciting and very closely contested competition.
A well designed but challenging course was tackled by 19 combinations, all intent on scoring as many World Cup qualification points as possible. Only three clears were ridden during the first round; Matthew Afford and Kaluna Salute, Kristy Bruhn and Jack and Brook Dobbin and Carrado MVNZ. The top 12 combinations were invited to come back for the second round, with penalties from the first round carried forward.
Clint Beresford and Emmaville Jitterbug were the fourth last to compete in the jump-off, being the fasted combination on 4 faults in Round 1. They rode a thrilling clear round in a lightning fast time of 63.28 seconds to throw down the gauntlet to the three remaining combinations. Next out was Brook Dobbin on Carrado MVNZ, the first rider carrying zero penalties from Round 1, however they had a rail and couldn’t take the lead from Beresford. The penultimate competitor, Kristy Bruhn, a local favourite, was also unable to go clear, again incurring just the 4 penalties. Finally, the fastest clear Round 1 combination of Matthew Afford and Kaluna Salute entered the arena with the very real prospect of a clear round securing them the victory. However, it was not to be, with a single rail down relegating them to second place.
Five combinations finished on 4 penalties, and it was Beresford’s clear round and super fast time in in the jump off that secured him the victory.
