Emily Excels at the Yalambi Autumn Classic

A feature event on the Western Australian Jumping calendar is the Yalambi Autumn Classic, which was held earlier this month at the beautiful Yalambi Farm Stud, at Wilyabrup, in the Margaret River Region about 250km south of Perth.

It was a three-day jumping extravaganza, with classes filling three arenas over a three-day program. There were classes for everybody, with the rail heights ranging from 0.45m to a lofty 1.40m for the Grand Prix.

As is usually the case, the feature event of the show were the dog races, which entertained the large crowd prior to the main equine event, the Australian Underground Drilling Yalambi Grand Prix. With the rails set at 1.40m on a course designed by Graeme Watts, there were only five starting combinations, but they provided plenty of thrills for the large crowd which gathered around the main arena.

The result of this class proves the old saying about apples not falling far from the tree. With a single rail in the first round, followed by a brilliant second round clear, the win went to Emily Hovell and Yalambi’s Finnigan. Emily is the wife of Rory who is the son of Sue Hovell, who started Yalambi Stud and where Emily works as the assistant stud manager. Also, Yalambi’s Finnigan, which was campaigned by Tom McDermott a couple of years ago up to World Cup Qualifier level, was bred and born at Yalambi Stud. Second place in the Grand Prix went to Leon Carroll and YPH Picasso, beating into third place YPH Picasso’s Dam, Oaks Zena, ridden by Stephanie Tucker.

In all, it was a magnificent weekend of jumping competition. Congratulations to the winners and all the placegetters of every class in the show as listed below:
