Pryde’s Easifeed Gatton World Cup 2018 – Championship Results from Day 4
The final day of the Pryde’s Easifeed Gatton World Cup Qualifying event saw a programme choc-full of championship classes. Australian Jumping is delighted to report on all today’s finals.
CLASS 28 – YOUNG RIDER CHAMPIONSHIP
The Young Rider Champion is Erin Buswell and her 12-year-old gelding Quero Quero. Second place went to Elizabeth Ballard on Bramley Star and the final place on the podium went to Brooke Langbecker on Flowerdale Diamond.
A small field of 16 contested the final and with only three clear rounds, the top three were sorted out before the jump-off. Buswell and Quero Quero, fresh from their 3rd placing in the Caboolture leg of the World Cup Qualifier, were the stars of the Young Rider Championship. In the first qualifier on Thursday they were the only combination to deliver a clear round, while at the same time completing the course in the equal fastest time. In the 2ndqualifying event on Friday, they were narrowly beaten into 2nd place by Brook Langbecker. However, it was in today’s final that the combination really shone. Once again, they recorded the fastest time while going clear and were the only combination to also go clear in the jump-off to run out deserving winners.
Second placegetters Elizabeth Ballard and Bramley Star saved their best for the final. After finishing 6th and 11th in the qualifying rounds, with a total of 20 penalties, they produced their first clear round of the competition in the final. However, despite a very fast time, a single rail down in the jump-off relegated this combination to 2nd place.
Brooke Langbecker and Flowerdale Diamond could perhaps consider themselves a little unlucky. After coming 3rd and 1st in the qualifying rounds, then going clear in the first round of the final, they were unfortunately eliminated in the jump-off, to finish in 3rd place.
The top eight placings in the Young Rider Championship are listed below.

CLASS 29 – MINI PRIX CHAMPIONSHIP – 1.40m
Emerging from an exciting jump-off in the final, the winner of the Mini Prix Championship today was Hayley Morris riding the 9-year-old mare Miss Money Penny. Second place went to Peter McMahon on K.S. Sovereign’s Cadel, with Tom McDermott riding Yalambis Finnigan into a close 3rd.
Entry into the Mini Prix Championship was achieved by being one of the top 30 riders from the combined results of the Qualifying rounds held on Thursday and Friday. In the first qualifier, Hayley Morris and Miss Money Penny came 3rd and followed this up with 24th (with 8 penalties) on Friday. However, the combination showed their class in the final. They were the fastest qualifiers into a 14-way jump-off, where they showed it was no fluke to record a time almost half a second better than the second placegetter.
Peter McMahon and K.S. Sovereign’s Cadel had a consistent series, qualifying for the final after finishing 13th and 3rd respectively in the preliminary rounds. They had 5 clear rounds in the series to finish a well deserved second.
Third place went to Tom McDermott on the 9-year-old gelding Yalambis Finnegan, after finishing 9th and 6th in the qualifiers, just half a second out of 2nd place.

CLASS 31 – JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP – 1.20m
The 20 top pairings from the combined results of the two qualifying classes were invited to contest the Junior Championship final today at Gatton. A high-class final ensued with over half the field going clear, setting up an exciting jump-off, where the top six placings again went clear. In the end Nicolette and Clemency Hughes were declared the winners by just 0.05 seconds, from Sophia Carlon riding Crescendo NZPH. Cameron Moffatt and HPS Minou were a very close 3rd.
The winning pair of Clemency Hughes and Nicolette saved their best for the final. In Friday’s first qualifier, they had a clear but slow round to finish 9th, and in Saturday’s second qualifier, a single time penalty saw them finish 12th. In the final, going double clear with a very fast jump-off time was enough to secure victory by the barest of margins.
Sophia Carlon and Crescendo NZPH showed steady improvement throughout the series. Finishing in 15th then 8th position in the qualifiers, they steadily got faster to just miss out on the win. This pairing had five rides in the series and did not incur a single penalty.
Also delivering five clear rounds, third placing was claimed by another combination which showed steady improvement. Cameron Moffatt and HPS Minou placed 11th and then 7th in the qualifying rounds, missing out on 2nd place by just over half a second.

CLASS 32 – OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP – 1.20m/1.25m
The final of the Open Championship, held over 1.25m, was won by experienced rider Ron Easey on Town Man. Second place went to Philip Knight on Twister with the 3rd place filled by Kirstie Ansell riding Vakarra Cayerado.
This high-class final was only competed by the top 30 performers in the two qualifying rounds held on Thursday and Saturday. A very competitive round saw a 14-way jump-off and with nine double clears, time alone determined the placings.
Ron Easy and Town Man eased into the competition by finishing 23rd and 13th in the qualifying rounds. In the final, they recorded one of the fastest clear rounds and went on to win the jump-off with a scorching clear round in 37.29 seconds, over three seconds faster than the second placegetter.
The combination of Philip Knight and Twister, fresh from their 2nd placing in the Amateur Championship at Caboolture last weekend, performed ultra-consistently over the series. They placed 3rd in both qualifying events and despite riding the whole event clear could not match the pace of the winner, to take out a well-deserved 2nd.
The third placed combination of Kirstie Ansell and her 6-year-old gelding Vakarra Cayerado, overcame a slow start in the series (24th) to finish 2nd in Saturday’s qualifier. Two fast, clear rounds saw them take 3rd place, just 0.14 seconds behind 2nd.
The top eight placings in the Open Championship are listed below.
