Isbister Ignites WA State Jumping Championships

Last weekend saw the Western Australian State Jumping Championships conducted at the beautifully prepared grounds of the Serpentine Horse and Pony Club, about 60 km south of the Perth CDB. The championships were held under clear skies in warm sunny conditions. With the temperatures nudging 30 degrees on Sunday, it was enough for riders to be permitted to leave their jackets off, however, it was still much more comfortable than the scorching conditions that prevailed last year.
With three rings in action over 3 days of competition over 60 classes were decided, with rails starting from 60cm on arena 3, all the way up to the around 1.40m for the State Senior Title sponsored by Drive Straight Brake and Alignment Service. The feature class on Saturday was the Gaenor McInnes Memorial for horses 40 points and under.
Course Designer extraordinaire, Mr Kevin Tully worked hard all weekend in the main arena setting tracks that provided both an appropriate level of challenge for the competitors and pleasing viewing for the spectators.
Friday saw a number of warm up classes which gave combinations the opportunity to fine tune their form in preparation for the championship classes later in the program. Highlight results from the day included The Beluga Park and EWA Bronze Series class, which was won by Chloe Gee and Torridon Limited Edition, who by the end of the show had been pronounced as the best performed horse in the Jumping WA Ring 1. The SNS Equest and EWA Silver Series class was won by Annabel Cowcher and Nalelu, who also combined on Sunday to take out the West Coast Vets Mini-Prix with a fine double clear performance. The final class of the day on Arena 1 was the Perth Performance Horses WA State Speed Title, which saw young Tessa Lill and Yalambi’s Key Largo blitz the field, which was great warm up for their tilt at the Young Rider Championship.
The first class on Saturday on the Jumping WA main arena was the Jakoma Equestrian and EWA Junior Leader Board class, which was won by the only double clear combination in the field, Chloe Versteegen and LG Brandy Man, with second going to the in-form Chloe Gee and Torridon Limited Edition, who just pipped out Chloe Versteegen from taking the quinella with MC Pico Diamonds. In the Benell Park & Spooks Riding, EWA Amateur Leader Board class it was Grace Fuchsbichler and Isla FPH, going double clear to take the win. The next class was the Evolution Animal Care: Horse of the Year Series and just as she had done earlier in the day, it was Chloe this time with Diamond B Vigo taking the win with another double clear performance, to live up the honour well and truly of being named the Equestrian WA Junior Sports Star of the year in 2020.

The feature event of the day was a wonderful competition, held in memory of Gaenor McInnes. The class, that has been held for the past 15 years showcases some of WA’s most talented up and coming horses and this year was no exception. Held over two rounds, with a further jump-off if required, the classy field saw 12 first round clear combinations, which were all invited back, by the judges, for Round 2. At the end of this round, there were still four combinations who had all the rails up and so a four-way jump-off was held. Unfortunately for them, Tia Hall and Cioccolato retired during their round and the other three combinations all took a single rail, so it came down to the timekeeper to sort things out. Slowest of the three were Chloe Versteegen and Cera Quantero, who this time had to settle for third place. Second place was awarded to Trevor “Spook” March and Caracos, with the win going to Sarah Isbister and Lafayette MVNZ, with a time just over half a second quicker. There was a certain sense of de ja vu when the last class on the main arena for the day, the CTCE Arenas and EWA Young Rider Leader Board, was won by Tessa Lill and Yalambi’s Hugo Boss. For Lill, it was a repeat performance as she had won the Speed Title on Friday as the last class of the day as well.

If the competition had been fantastic over the first two days, it got even better on Sunday.
Things kicked-off with the Two Queens State Junior Final, which went to Ellie Gough and Don J’amee, relegating Chloe Versteegen along with both LG Brandy Man and Cera Quantero to fill both second and third placings. The Biomechanic Vet sponsored WA State Amateur final was up next and following up on her winning performance in Saturday’s Amateur Leader Board class was Grace Fuchsbichler again taking the win, this time with Parker GHP.
As mentioned earlier, the Mini-Prix was won by Annabel Cowcher and Nalelu, their second big win of the weekend with Rosie Oliver and Carina also going double clear to take second place. A single rail in the jump-off saw Georgie Siciliano and Hero Chin P have to be satisfied with third place.

The next equine event on the program was the feature Drive Straight Brake and Alignment Service – WA State Senior Final, however, there was mayhem to be had beforehand with the two heats of dog races held on the main arena. First it was the small dogs in action and on the starters signal, chaos reigned. The dogs all immediately started running as fast as they possibly could and some of them even ran in the general direction of their catchers stationed about 50 metres away. It took a little while, but they were eventually all rounded up and when the dust settled and the yapping concluded, it was announced that the class had been awarded to a cute Jack Russell, who took home a large bag of goodies supplied by the dog race sponsor Elanco Australasia. Immediately following was the big dog race which seemed to be a much more serious affair, given the lack of constant yapping compared to the contestants in the previous race. Among the 11 starters, there was an Irish wolfhound, a labrador, a German shepherd, a mastiff and a few that looked like cattle dogs, and a whippet, which took out the race. This winner looked very much like the grey whippet named Slinky who won the Patrons Cup event just two weeks ago and if we are right, could be a special for the Yalambi Jumping Classic in a few weeks time!
Once the dogs had cleared the arena, it was time for the main event to start. It was an elite field comprising of just 11 combinations and with three riders doubling up- just eight riders. Of the 11 combinations, there were four clear rounds, (the fastest being Chadd Donovan and Oaks Diabella in 83.88 seconds), four 4-fault rounds, one 8-fault round and two 12-fault rounds. All but the two 12-faulters were invited back for Round 2. With faults from Round One carrying forward to round 2, the pressure was on for all combinations and in a magnificent display of jumping, all nine second round rides saw a total of just 4 rails down. While a couple of the first round 4-faulters went clear in round 2 to finish on a total of 4, they could not match the three combinations that had gone double clear and would now require a jump-off top sort out their positions on the podium.
First out in the jump-off were Rosie Oliver and Bicento who took rails at the third and last fence to end up on a three-round total of 8 faults. Next out were the 2020 State Senior Title holders, Caitlin Bolger and Caprino. They made it more than half-way around the course while leaving all the rails intact, but two down in the second half saw them also finish with a three-round total of 8, but with a time more than three seconds quicker than Oliver and Bicento, the worst they could finish was second.
Finally, the last combination entered the arena, knowing that a clear round or even a single rail down would be enough for the win. Sarah Isbister and Lafayette MVNZ must have felt confident, given their win in the prestigious Gaenor McInnis Memorial class on Saturday afternoon. Isbister and Lafayette MVNZ cruised around the course, knowing that time was not really important but not taking rails with them was. In the end, they finished some 9 seconds slower than Bulger’s time, (but still well within the time allowed) and left all the raise up, to record the only triple clear in the class and earn the win.

At the presentation, Isbister was delighted with the win. She said that it had been a lifelong ambition to win a major Grand-Prix class and that she was delighted to have finally won one. She said that she had been competing on this horse for more than 5 years and it takes a special horse to win two major classes on the same weekend. In conclusion, she thanked the sponsors of the class, the venue and show organisers as well as the course designer and her competitors. The first six placings in the Senior Title were:
CLASS 12: Drive Straight Brake and Alignment Service: WA State Senior Final – 1.35-1.40m

2nd | Caitlin Bolger | Caprino |

6th | Sophie Ahmat | Noblewood Park Noblesque |
The action for the weekend did not conclude there with the final class being the Yalambi Stud Farm WA State Young Rider Final, with the result revealing a couple of remarkable coincidences. Firstly, there was the coincidence that the State title sponsored by Yalambi Farm Stud was won by a horse produced by them, namely Yalambi’s Key Largo. The even bigger and even more remarkable coincidence was that the rider of Yalambi’s Key Largo was none other than Tessa Lill, who had won the final class on the main arena on each of the three days. Lill is now the concurrent holder of the State Speed Title as well as the State Young Rider Title. It is a name we might hear a lot more of in the future.
At the end of the show, the following awards were announced:
Best Performed Off The Track horse in Jumping WA Ring 1: TMP Razzle Dazzle
Best Performed Horse in Jumping WA Ring 1: Torridon Limited Edition
Best Performed AWHA registered horse in Ring 1: JEP Heartwarming JB owned by Jennie Franceschi ridden by Chelsea Whittington
