Jumping @ Willinga – off to a Flying Start

The annual four-day Jumping @ Willinga extravaganza kicked off today at the beautiful Willinga Park complex at Bawley Point on the NSW South Coast. Even the consistent rain in the afternoon and evening did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors and spectators alike.

The action started early and on the Grandstand Arena, the first class of the day was the Kelvin Grove Equestrian Open 1.20m, conducted as a Special Two Phase competition. There were a massive 40 combinations who left all the rails up however, with a margin of just on 0.10 seconds, the win went to the Queensland combination of Clem Smith and his gelding Quantico 12.

In the Junior category of the 1.20m class, sponsored by Coolmore, the win went to the in-form Jett Newman and Wanda, fresh from their win in the Junior Tour at the Tamworth World Cup show just a couple of weeks ago.

The Evans Park, Open 2 phase 1.30m class, saw 32 clear rounds with Tom McDermott filling the top two spots. He took the win with Alpha Activity with a second phase time of 30.96 seconds, which pushed himself and Warraleigh Park Cortez into second with a time of 32.09 seconds. Jamie Priestley and Oaks Diamantina filled the podium.

The Young Rider section of the 1.30m class was sponsored by Yandoo Park. The class was taken out by Lucy Locke and Quero Quero as the fastest of nine clear rounds.

The final class on the main arena was the JPR Equestrian 1.40m competition. Once again it was Tom McDermott showing the way. This time we saw the 2019 Australian Senior championship combination of McDermott and Elegance De La Charmille leave all the rails up in a scorching phase 2 time of 38.81 seconds, taking the win from the second placed Josh Collins and Cornel, who were 0.25 seconds slower. Third place went to the current World Cup Qualifying series leader, Olivia Hamood and Knock Out 111.

On the Yandoo Park second arena, there were two sections to the Unicornium 1.00m class. The Adult section was won by Hollie Spence and Ego Miss Moet while the Junior section was taken out by Jasmine Spira and Avenly Bundy.

The rails were then put up to 1.05m where Mallacoota Property Sales were the sponsors of both the Adult and Junior sections. After finishing in fourth place at 1.00m earlier, the win in the Adult section of this class went to Emily Baldwin and the mare Carpina. The Junior section went to Sophie Baldwin and CW Conquest, who followed up this win with a win later in the day in the Open 1.15m class sponsored by R&L Richardson Haulage.

The final class of the day on Arena 2 was for 5 and 6-year-old horses and Boree Equine’s Jennifer Wood combined with a pair of great prospects to finish in both first and second place. The combination of Wood and the Oaks Sport Horses bred Oaks 007, took the win, just 0.8 seconds clear of Wood and Carona B. Third place went to Tallara Cameron and KPH Campari.
