McDermott magic at Stonewall
Above: Tom McDermott and Cooley Gangster.
Following on from their wonderful TSHA show last weekend, four days of Jumping action wrapped up this afternoon when the Stonewall Grand Prix Showjumping Championships reached their conclusion. Krissy Harris has done a wonderful job in developing this Jumping facility showpiece, tucked away near Mangrove Mountain, inland from the NSW Central Coast. The competitions were held over two arenas and a large crowd gathered this afternoon in the VIP area to enjoy fine food, fine wine and, of course, the spectacle of fine jumping.
Before we get to the feature class of the weekend which was held this afternoon, the Shugg Group Grand Prix, we can’t go without mentioning some of the fantastic performances over the four days. Maroota based veteran rider Andrew Inglis completely dominated the first day of competition, when he won all three classes held on the main arena, winning the first class with Laracas and the next two with Alillie, firstly at 1.30m then 1.40m. For good measure, he also took out an open 1.20m on the final day of competition.
Not to be outdone, Australian triple Olympian Shane Rose shone on the Friday, dominating with wins in four classes on the day. His wins were at 1.10 with The Bandit, at 1.20 with Be My Daisy, at 1.35m with Easy Turn and at 1.45m with Virgil, his Tokyo Olympics horse.
There were two other winners of more than one class. Samantha Dernee paired with Laurel Glen Quintessence to win the futurity final and with Off-the-Track horse Raise and Angel to win an open 1.15m class. Also, Queenslander Olivia Hamood combined with Where’s Cameron to win a pair of 1.15m classes.
What the Feature Grand Prix lacked in numbers, it sure made up for in class. While there were only 12 on the start list. The list featured the recently crowned Australian Senior Champion, Tom McDermott as well as the new Australian Young Rider Champion, Clemency Hughes. Throw in the current leader of the Australian World Cup Qualifying series, Olivia Hamood riding two horses, and the winning combination from the Mini Prix at the Australian Championships, you have quite a field.
The Mark Atkins designed track certainly tested out the entrants, with two falls and only two clear rounds, those being by Tom McDermott and Cooley Gangster and Olivia Hamood and Jane Fonda DVD. The top eight combinations were invited back for a second round, coming out in seeded order. By the time we got to Hamood and Jane Fonda DVD as the second last pair, the lowest score achieved over the two rounds was eight by three different combinations, with the lead and the fastest Round 2 time being held by Sarah McMillan and Tyrone VDL.

Unfortunately for Hamood, it was not to be their day, with a pair of rails adding them to the cast of combinations on eight and slotting them into second place. McDermott and Cooley Gangster, a combination which had placed second in the first qualifying round of the Australian Senior Championships less than a month ago, now only had to complete the course while accruing seven faults or less to take the win. The enthusiastic course commentator, Martin Gostelow, introduced McDermott as the “master of faster” however, just for once, he did not live up to this title. McDermott and ‘Monkey’ had a careful steadily-paced round, which saw all the rails intact and a time more than five seconds slower than any of the eight-faulters was enough to secure the win. It was a calculated ride by McDermott who knew that leaving the rails in place was much more important than setting a fast time.

It was a wonderful way to wrap up the four days, with McDermott heaping praise on the facility during his presentation speech. There was also a special thank you presentation to Krissy Harris with the gathered crowd showing their appreciation for not only the work she does in encouraging Off-the-track horses to compete in jumping, but how she has opened her home to allow others to enjoy the marvellous facility she has built. Hopefully it will be a venue on the jumping calendar that is enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike for many years to come.
Congratulations to all the winners and placegetters from all the show, who are listed below:
