While the four major championships have been progressing towards a big weekend of finals at the Pet Circle Australian Jumping Championship, they have not been the only action for the spectators here at Boneo Park. The Turiya Farms Mini Prix Championship had its first round on Thursday and its second round today, with the final set down for decision on Sunday afternoon.

Each of the first two qualifying rounds have been run under Special Two-Phase conditions with the top 28 combinations (half the entrants) eligible to battle it out in the final where a jump off will be held if required and over $9000 prize money will be on offer.

Combined performances across the two qualifying rounds will create a seeded start list for the final, where all competitors will start on an even footing.

The first round on Thursday saw 29 of the 55 combinations on the start list get through the first phase of the round unscathed, with 14 of these going on to complete the second phase with the rails intact. Ninth out in the draw was Western Australian, Rosie Oliver and the mare Nascari, who were better than all those who had come before them and held the lead a long way through the class. We were just over half-way through, when Shimona Fraid and Cassina put in a clear performance with a second phase time over a second faster than Rosie and Loreen.

With just one combination to come, Shimona and Cassina were still in the lead and it looked like the class was thiers. That was until Jack Barker and Cornets Prinzess took to the arena. They produced a scintillating double clear performance and with a second phase time of 31.54 seconds, they snatched victory.

It was a thrilling finish to what had been a very interesting class to watch.

The second qualifying round was held this afternoon and it turned out to be as entertaining a class as we saw yesterday.

Out first in the draw, the New Zealand combination of Oliver Croucher and NRS Ricochet MVNZ set the pace with a fast double clear which led the class for a considerable length of time. They were overtaken for a little while by dual Olympian James Paterson-Robinson aboard Diamond B Vivienne who shaved almost a second off the time of the previous leader. However, the competition was turned on its head when Tom McDermott and the gelding Ketut entered the arena. They put in a fantastic performance, going double clear and with a second phase time of 42.63 to snatch the lead.

It set a standard than none of the following combinations could match and they went on to claim the class.
