Last week, Jumping@Willinga was held and despite some challenging weather conditions, the show proved to be a great success. Conducted at the late Terry Snow’s magnificent property at Bawley Point on the NSW South Coast, there was four days of action across two arenas and although extreme winds on the Saturday caused an early finish to proceedings, a reshuffling of the program saw all classes completed on the Sunday.

One of the classes that was originally scheduled for Saturday evening and was postponed until Sunday was the inaugural 4Cyte Willinga Park CSI1* World Cup qualifier. Held over two rounds, it was a wonderfully exciting class and our full wrap of the competition can be read HERE.

Another feature class of the program was the third leg of the 2024 Stal Tops Australian Young Rider Series which brought together some of the best Young Riders in the country. Taken out by one of the most promising Young Riders in the country, our full article on this class can be accessed HERE.

The Thursday program concluded with a Trans-Tasman test, pitting a team of four New Zealander combinations against two teams of four from Australia. With a Nations Cup style format the three teams competed over two rounds with each team dropping their worst score from each round before arriving at a team total. The Australian Green team, comprising of Clem Smith, Sarah McMillan, Phillip Lever and Billy Raymont were able to put together an unassailable perfect team total of zero. With a total of just four, the New Zealand team, comprising Julia Davey, Hayley Morris, Logan Massie and Sophie Scott came in second with the Gold Australian team (James Mooney, Mattea Davidson, Robert Palm and Gemma Creighton) just a single penalty behind on five, in third place.

Before the winds came on Saturday, the Evans Park Junior Spectacular saw 41 combinations line up, producing 21 clear rounds, creating the need for a massive jump off. At the end of the class, there were still four combinations without a penalty against them, so it came down to times. The fastest of these four combinations and therefore the win went to Charlie Magnier and Krescendo, who rocketed around the course, finishing in 34.11 seconds. They ever so slightly eclipsed the performance of the second placed Tanner Robinson and Charlie (the horse!) with a time of 34.22 seconds. Jada Burgun and here mare LG Amarillo were third in 37.58 seconds.

Sunday was a day of finals, with the action on the main arena opening with the King Ranch Equestrian Futurity Spectacular. Open to horses 8-years-old or less, the three double clear performances had the podium to themselves. First in a time of 44.10 seconds was Frida Lindgren aboard Wondareen Colleen, going one better than their second place in a similar class two days earlier. Their jump off was 44.10 seconds, 3.5 seconds faster than the second placed Clint Beresford and ES Dakota. Third place went to Jess Brown and Equus Indemand with a time of 49.18 seconds.

The Shepherd Electrical Mini Prix Spectacular was fought out over two rounds with the win going to the only one of 32 combinations that managed to get around the course twice without incurring a single penalty. Sarah McMillan and Kakadu BHV were the winners, ahead of four combinations which finished the class on a total of four penalties. Of these four, the fastest second round and therefore second place in the class went to Billy Raymont and his young star Blue Balou PS, followed by Frida Lindgren and Mabobri De Mabribo in third place.

Like the Mini Prix, there was only one combination to record double clear in the Willinga Park Vet Hospital Amateur Spectacular. Courtney Cusack and Sandhills Swing were the winners, ahead of Melissa Turner and Rosthwaite Zanti in second and Lori James and Restauranteur SHP in third.

The Construction Control Children’s Spectacular saw 24 combinations on the start list and with 11 clears, a jump off was required to sort out the prizemoney and podium positions. After the jump off, there were still five combinations on zero, so the win went to the quickest around the jump off course, Alexa Garcia and Alpha Centauri. Their time of 36.29 seconds eclipsed Eliza Baird and Bling Du Rouet, home in second in 37.34 seconds. There was a tie for third place with two combinations scooting around the jump off course in just 38.43 seconds. They were Luiza Dias Marucio and her young mare Crumpet Xtreme and Evie Magnier and Wallaroo Carnival. In fifth place, also double clear was Evie Magnier again, this time aboard Wanda.

It was a fantastic show and as usual so well organised by Edwena Mitchell and her team. All goes well for the five days of jumping which will occur at this wonderful venue when the Australian Jumping Championships are held here for the first time in November 2024.
