Tom McDermott and Cooley Gangster – NSW State Senior Champions
Above: Tom McDermott and Cooley Gangster.
The NSW State Titles were held last week at SIEC in a four-day jumping extravaganza. After three days of preliminaries, Sunday was the day for all the big finals, which saw winners crowned in all five major categories.
The very last class of the show was the Final of the State Senior Championship where a second placing was enough for Tom McDermott and Cooley Gangster to take out the NSW State Senior Title for 2023. They had five rides in the series, leaving all the rails up and were impressive competitors over the three days of competition. After winning Round 1, they slipped to third place in the second round before their second in the final by a margin of just over three seconds. Aaron Hadlow finished the title race in both second and third place with Cera Stiletto and Vahlinvader respectively. Cera Stiletto, in particular, was very consistent, finishing third, first and fourth over the three classes, while Vahlinvader improved each day, finishing sixth, and second, before taking the win in the final. It was fascinating tussle over the course of the show, with only three points separating the top three at the end of the program.
Jack Barker and Tulara Colchic, winners of last week’s third leg of the Stal Tops Young Rider Series are in rare form and it showed by their dominance in the Young Rider Title race. Jack, who is still competing at Junior level, showed that he will be a name of the future. He and Tulara Colchic won both the first and second rounds, before being pipped by less than two seconds out of a win in the final, despite putting in another double clear performance. The reigning Australian Young Rider Champion, Clemency Hughes won the final with YPH Capulet, wrapping up second place in the title race, following a second and a third in the rounds.

The winners of the 2023 NSW State Junior Title were Jake Tomlinson and Vinchino. They were a model of consistency over the three classes, placing on the podium each time. They placed second in Round 1 then won Round 2, before coming third in the final. Their total of 61 points was two clear of the second placed Ella Hayward and Edena DP. They were third and fourth in the rounds, but a big win in the final shot them into second place by the end of the competition. After a win in the first round, Jack Barker and Tulara For Quinar, finished ninth and fourth subsequently, to finish a clear third with 54 points.

Sashi Arnott and Arden Elsa won the State Children’s Title. They won both Round 1 and Sunday’s final, which was enough to clinch the title despite only finishing in twelfth place in Round 2.
The Amateur title was taken out by Tori Doak and Blackall Park Rap. They won both the first and second rounds of the competition which gave them a sufficient lead going into the final to take the title, despite taking their only rail of the series to finish in eighth place in the final. With a total of 61 points, they finished three points clear of Melanie Heygate and Oaks Quebec in second place. Melanie and Oaks Quebec were second in both the rounds and finished seventh in the final. Third place in the Championship was a tie on 55 points between Jacqueline Basquil and Converse, who won the final, and Victoria Montano and Jellystone Park Cinzano, who benefitted from their consistent performances of fifth, third and sixth.

Other significant wins on the program were Emily Riley and Rhapsody In Blue, who not only won the Mini Prix warm up class, but also won the Mini Prix Championship, showing the rest a clean pair of heels.

Finally, the Speed Championship was the highlight of the Saturday program, which saw the experienced Andrew Inglis and Alillie prevail over Ashley Cutler and Emcee Vagabond by a margin of just 0.25 seconds. Less than a third of a second back in third place was William Wood and Powerhouse Park Ego Roc.

It was a great show and although the number of competitors was probably not quite what the organisers were hoping for, those that did compete more than made up for that with skill and class.
Congratulations goes to all the title winners as well as the winners and placegetters in each class conducted.
