Australian Jumping

The weekend before the Waratah World Cup show, the traditional Warm-Up weekend was held. It gives the chance for competitors to fine-tune their approach for the following weekend as well as giving riders and horses alike the opportunity to familiarise themselves with surroundings that may be new to them.

The feature class of the show was the Keeden Contracting Grand Prix, held over 1.50m. Course Designer David Sheppard set a challenging course for the 11 combinations entered, which saw the four clear combinations invited back for a jump off.

James Mooney and his mare KPH Cavatina were the first to tackle the jump off course and they showed the others how to do it. Clear in a time of 36.61 seconds was the standard which the others set out to try and better. First to try were Jess Rice-Ward and Tulara Diarangol who were not at the peak of their game taking a pair of rails.

The visitors from New Zealand Julie Davey and LT Holst Freda were the next to try. They scooted around the course in and went clear, however, their time of 38.23 saw them slot in behind the leaders. The last combination to go were Sam Overton and his pocket Rocket, Oaks Cassanova. They set out at a very swift pace trying to steal the win, however, despite it being very close, it was not to be. They completed the course in just 36.72 seconds, which was 0.11 seconds slower than it needed to be. So, the pace setters, James Mooney and KPH Cavatina took the week deserved win completing a great preparation for the World Cup the following weekend.
