The 2023 Jumping Tasmania State Titles were held last weekend (27^th and 28^th of January). Hosted by Jumping Tasmania South, they were held at the Tasmanian Equestrian Centre, located at Lauderdale, just across the Derwent River East of Hobart.

It was an action packed two days with the Sunday choc-full of Championship action. The show was dominated by a few riders who went home with most of the spoils from the weekend. Without doubt, one of the stars of the show was Hobart based teenager Chloe Daun. Chloe, who has competed in Eventing at the Melbourne 3DE in the two-star class, won almost half of the 23 classes competed for over the two days. On Saturday, she won four classes, taking out open 0.90m and 1.00m classes with PEC Willunga Royal Castana, followed by another pair of wins at 1.20m and 1.30m with PEC Rambling Rose. However, it was on the Sunday that she really excelled, picking up five championships along the way. Firstly, she won the Open 1.00m Championship, again with PEC Willunga Royal Castana as well as filling second place aboard PEC Fairytale. Chloe and PEC Fairytale then avenged their second placing by taking out the 1.05m Championship, before she rode PEC Barindale Grandeur to victory in the 1.10m championship. Chloe then took on the Speed Championships at both 1.05m and 1.20m, with victory ensuing on PEC Willunga Royal Castana and PEC Rambling Rose respectively, which secured the Emcee Apparel Young Horse of the show award for PEC Rambling Rose.

However, despite this remarkable avalanche of wins, Chloe was not the only star of the show. While she won class after class, it was another teenager who stole the show, taking out three championship titles. Laura Edwards, who along with Chloe is a member of the Tasmanian state Squad, went home as the winner of the State Junior Rider Title, the State Young Rider Title and the State Senior Title. For the first of her trio of Titles, Laura rode Luchia Elmare to victory in the 1.20m championship and by being the highest placed Junior was awarded the State Junior Title. In the feature class of the show with the rails set at 1.30m, Laura also excelled. After the first round of the class, there were only two combinations who had qualified for the second round, being Laura and Luchia Elmare as well as Laura and Warrego Africa, with both combinations being names as joint winners of the class. By taking out this class Laura was awarded the Senior Title and by (obviously) being the highest placed Young Rider, that Title was hers also.

There were other Championship winners on the Sunday. Both the 0.80m and the 0.90m championships were won by Tasmanian Interschools representative Maya Stephens and Nine Acres Luna Eclipse, while the 0.70m Championship was taken out by Sarah Shelvo and Steam Roller. Speed championships at 0.95m and 0.80m were won by Lucy Johnston and Cotswold Belladonna and Pia Holmes and Kiandra Squiggle respectively.

The 0.80m Championship also served to determine the State Children’s Title. By finishing as the highest placed Child rider in this class (fourth), Rose Edwards and Gracie were awarded the Title.

It was a brilliant weekend of jumping competition highlighted by a couple of superstars of the future. We hope these young riders can venture across to the mainland at some point in the future, to demonstrate what Tasmanians can do when competing on a bigger stage.
