A hot weekend of Jumping in Shepparton

The Northern Victorian Showjumping Club (NVSJC), based at Shepparton, held their FEI World Cup Festival over the weekend. In conditions which certainly kept the sellers of cold beverages busy, three great days of jumping were held over two arenas with plenty of action to keep jumping enthusiasts satisfied.
David Sheppard built courses which provided great entertainment over the course of the show, which attracted competitors from far and wide, in search of the prize money on offer.
The feature class of the weekend was the Southern Cross Event Hire World Cup Qualifier, the thirty-fifth time that the NVSJC has held this event, which was the first leg of the scheduled 10-leg Australian season. It was an exciting class, which had the crowd seeking shade on the hill enthralled right up until the last fence had been cleared. For our full story on Saturdays World Cup class please click HERE.
While Sarah McMillan and Tyrone VDL led the way in the World Cup Qualifier, the Horse Hay Junior Grand Prix, went to the Victorian combination of Sienna Holdsworth-Rose and Coolart Farm Short Torque, with a classy double clear performance. The sixth placegetters in last year’s Australian Children’s Championship showed the field a clear pair of heels as the scooted around the jump-of course in sizzling 35.93 seconds to return a double clear performance.

The most successful rider on the program was local youngster Eliza Abrahams who took out three classes. On Friday Eliza paired with Emcee Street Wise to win the Open 0.90m class, followed immediately by a win with Rocket Rod in the Open 1.00m. She also placed second in both these classes as well on Rocket Rod and Emcee Street Wise respectively. On Saturday Eliza was back with Rocket Rod, taking the win in the 0.95m class. Making it a family affair, Sunday saw Eliza’s father Stuart Abrahams win at 1.20m with Vainqueur.
If Eliza Abrahams was the queen of the sand arena, then Clem Smith would have to be named king of the grass arena, particularly after his efforts on Friday. We frequently see combinations winning more than one class on the outside arenas on the same day, however, we seldom see it on the main arena at any show. Queensland legend Clem Smith managed to achieve this on Friday when he and gelding Quantico 12 managed a pair of wins. Their first win came in the Open 1.30m single round class where their clear performance was more than four seconds faster than their nearest rivals. Later in the afternoon, they lined up in the Speed Championship and again led the way by more than four seconds to claim the championship. To top off a great weekend for this pair, they almost make it a hattrick of wins in Sunday’s Mini Prix. Despite a double clear performance and a very swift jump off time of 47.12 seconds, they were just pipped for the win by another Queensland combination of Thomas Sedger and Casino Jack who finished in 46.96 seconds. It was Sedger and Casino Jack’s second win of the weekend after having taken out the Tulara Warmbloods Talent Spotter class on Saturday morning.
There was one other double winner on the weekend, that being veteran NSW based rider Des Gleeson. Des combined with Mingara Vonbella in the open 1.10m class on Friday, followed by a win with Mingara Ivy in Saturday’s Open 1.15m class, all done with style and leaving all the rails intact.
It was a most enjoyable weekend of jumping and it is a credit to the NVSJC for organising such a top class show.
Congratulations to all the winners and placegetters over the weekend. The top six placings from every class on the program are listed below:
