The Magic Millions Summer Showjumping Classic CSI-W* was held last weekend at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC). The weather provided its challenges with very warm conditions prevailing across the four days of competition, highlighted by scorching conditions on the Saturday, where temperatures at SIEC peaked at around 43 degrees. The show organisers did a fantastic job juggling the program around to avoid competition in the hottest part of the days, with the welfare of the horses and riders a distinct priority. With early starts the order of the day, we suspect that history was made on Saturday when the feature event of the show, the Chatham Park World Cup Qualifier had wrapped up pretty much by morning tea time.

The World Cup Qualifier was taken out by last year’s World Cup Series winners, Sam Overton and Oaks Cassanova in their only start of this season. Tom McDermott and Cooley Gangster, who were runners up in the class, were crowned winners of the 2023 Series and will be invited to visit Riyadh next April to compete in the World Cup Final. Delayed until Sunday morning, the fourth and final Leg of the Stal Tops Australian Young Rider Series provided early entertainment for the spectators, with the win going to Chase Naylor and Misty Blue Ego Z. Jack Barker and Tulara Colchic had done enough however, in the early rounds and hung on to take the title. Click HERE for our full article on this class.

There were a number of other finals held on the Sunday program.

The EMCEE Apparel Super Junior final was taken out by Imogen Lindh and Licaviv, being the fastest of four combinations who went double clear. Charlie Magnier and his relatively new mount Notre Dame De Bourguignon were placed second ahead of Jada Burgun and LG Amarillo in third.

A two-way jump off was required to sort out the winner of the Winning Group Futurity Final. With both combinations again going clear it came down to times with the win going to Aaron Hadlow and Yalambi’s Kandy Ripple. Second place went to Amelia Douglass and the 7-year-old Balou Du Rouet gelding Balian D’n Hop Z which had previously been competing in Young Horse classes in Europe during 2022. Jessica Stalling and Parallax SCF incurred just a single time fault, placing them in third.

Stalling had better luck in the Camden Equine Centre Mini Prix final, where she and Chatina took the win, ahead of Emma Smith and Oaks Abracadabra and Olivia Hamood and Yirrkala Cassey in third.

Victoria Montano and Jellystone Park Cinzano were successful in the JNSW Amateur of the year class, being the fastest of six double clear performances. However, it was the third placed combination on the day, Jacqueline Basquil and the former Vicki Roycroft mount Converse, who were crowned NSW Amateurs of the year.

The most successful combination across the course of the show were local rider Ashley Cutler and Emcee Vagabond, who is better known around the stable as “Naughty”. They competed in four classes across the four days, winning three of them; Open 1.00m, 1.10m and 1.20m, and finishing third in another Open 1.20m class. In total, they had five rounds without incurring a single penalty in a fantastic overall performance.

It was a fantastic show and adds another chapter to the proud history of the Summer Classic event, which was first held in 1979. The honour role of the winners of the Summer Classic class reads like a who’s who of Australian Jumping history. We that there are many chapters to come.
