Rod McQueen: A man of many talents
Rod McQueen is a regular and popular face at Jumping competitions in Australia. A talented rider who grew from a young enthusiast into a World Cup competitor and a respected coach and commentator, Rod’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and a commitment to uplifting the next generation in the sport.
Rod’s introduction to the equestrian world came at a young age. At just nine years old, he first rode a horse at Centennial Park, a pivotal moment that would set the course for his future. His early experiences included casual rides during holidays, but under the mentorship of a Jumping instructor, Laz Petho, at Budapest Riding School who introduced him to Robert Stewart, Rod was introduced to a world of competitive riding that would shape his life. Robert found Rod his first horse, a talented Thoroughbred, and he quickly progressed through the ranks, competing at Junior and Young Rider levels at prestigious events like the Sydney Royal.
After finishing school, Rod pursued a plumbing apprenticeship, opting for a trade that allowed him to support his hobby and nurture his passion for horses. Rod trained with Chris and Helen Chugg and Amanda Madigan for 12 years, buying a young horse, ASB Vienna from Chris and Helen who he eventually took to World Cup level. After competing in two World Cup Qualifiers, Rod went back to Mini Prix level for a year to consolidate before stepping back up to compete in a World Cup Qualifier at Summer Classic and also winning the CSI2* Silver Grand Prix at Showcase of Showjumping in 2015.

Rod moved up to Kulnura on the NSW Central to live with his partner, and now wife (as of December last year), Jess Brown to work for Jess’s parents Cathy and Rod Brown at their professional Jumping stable, Equus Australia, where he is involved in training young horses and coaching students. Following a trip to Europe to visit Jess as she was campaigning for the Rio Olympics, Rod also started his own successful business, McQueen Equestrian, importing and selling a range of quality bits and accessories and if that is not enough, Rod is also the Australian Sales Representative for Bruno Delgrange Saddles.

While competing remains a part of his life, Rod’s focus began to shift towards coaching and developing young riders and horses. His natural inclination to help others, combined with the invaluable experiences he gained over the years, led him to find joy in teaching rather than just competing. As he put it, “I almost get more enjoyment out of coaching people now.” Rod’s commitment to coaching reflects his desire to give back to the equestrian community. He has become a sought-after coach, teaching clinics across the state and beyond, and nurturing the talents of young riders.
In addition to his coaching career, Rod has recently ventured into the world of commentary. Initially prompted by good friend, Caitlin Bolger, to commentate at the State Championships in Perth, he discovered a new passion. His background in sports and his love for storytelling allowed him to engage audiences by sharing insights about the riders and their journeys.
As he explains, “It’s all about giving people the information they need to hear and hopefully telling their stories in the best possible way.” Rod’s commentary has since included major events like Waratah World Cup Show, the 2024 Australian Jumping Championships and Magic Millions Showjumping on the Gold Coast at the beginning of this year, further establishing him as a knowledgeable voice in the equestrian community.
When envisioning his future, Rod sees himself continuing to grow in both coaching and commentary roles. He would love to coach at a national level and be an integral part of preparing riders for prestigious competitions, including the Brisbane Olympics. His ambition is not just to excel personally but to contribute meaningfully to the sport’s development in Australia.
Rod is also an ambassador for M.R. Breeches which he speaks very highly of, “Simon and Michael are lovely people and their breeches are so comfortable, such good quality and very affordable.”
It was an absolute pleasure to chat with Rod and learn more about his involvement in the sport.
