An exciting battle for Section 3 honours at Sydney Royal

The Group A Section 3 competition has wrapped up this morning at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The win in the final went to Jamie Winning-Kermond and Tulara Wat Colblensky, who incurred just a single time penalty, negating the need for a jump-off. Today’s final was the culmination of three earlier rounds of jumping action, so let’s take a look at how the Section 3 competition unfolded.
Way back on Wednesday, Round 1 of this competition took place with a seldom seen Accumulator class. The top 10 of the 13 combinations entered in the class all achieved the maximum score of 65 points with all the rails cleared meaning that it came down to times. The podium in this class was filled with Sydney Royal winning experience. The winning horse was Krescendo, with a time of 64.54 seconds, which was ridden by Tom McDermott, who has been named the most successful rider at the show in seven of the last 11 years, including the last three years in a row. Second place went to Tom Sedger and Check it Out, finishing in 69.48 seconds. A quick flick through the history books shows that Tom Sedger was named the Most Successful Boy Rider at the show in 2007. Going even deeper back in history, we find James Paterson-Robinson (JPR) was also named as the best boy rider in the show in 1994 and 1995. JPR has achieved a lot more in the ensuing 30 years, however, he, along with Oaks Evergreen TS recorded third place in this class with a time of 70.56 seconds. Also notable was the performance of Vicki Roycroft, steering Kenny Casino into fourth place, making a triumphant return to the venue, where last year she almost lost her life in suffering a serious medical episode while in the saddle.

Thursday saw the Section 3 horses out again, this time competing in a jump-off class. With 10 clears, it was a big jump-off, however, only two combinations could put together a double clear performance and had to be separated on times, which came down to a very tiny margin. In first place, in a time of 52.47 seconds, were Jamie Winning-Kermond and the mare Tulara Wat Colblensky. Jamie and “Juno” as she is known to her friends were coming off a sixth place in the first round. Second place went to Tom McDermott and stallion Mr Lincoln B in a time of 52.56 seconds. Tom Sedger and Check It Out appeared on the podium for the second day in a row, filling third place as the fastest four-faulters in the jump-off. Placings were as follows.

After a rest day on Friday, the Section 3 horses were out early in the morning on Saturday. On this occasion, there were only six clear rounds and only three of these six combinations also went clear in the jump-off. The win, with a jump off time of just 46.68 seconds went to the winners of the first round, Tom McDermott and Krescendo. After recent campaigns in Europe and the Middle East, Amelia Douglass has returned to Australia to compete at the show. Her travels were rewarded when she rode Yalambi’s Key Largo (50.36 seconds) into second place and gelding Balian D/N Hop Z (55.05 seconds) into third. The winners of the second round Jamie Winning-Kermond and the mare Tulara Wat Colblensky were back in sixth after a pair of rails in the jump-off.

The fourth and final day of competition for the section three horses was this morning in the Section 3 Final. A total of 13 combinations were on the start list and as mentioned earlier, although the class article number allowed for a jump-off, one was not necessary. Jamie Winning-Kermond and Tulara Wat Colblensky cleared all the rails, however, their time of 76.63 seconds was just over the time allowed of 76 seconds. It did not matter since the rest of the combinations on the start list all incurred at least four faults, they were declared the winners. Second place, as the fastest of the 4-faulters with a time 71.29 seconds were Victorian visitors, Brook Dobbin and Devos GP. Vicki Roycroft showed that she still has what it takes at almost 71 years of age, with a third placing (72.20 seconds with Copabella Ventura. Proving it was no fluke, she and Kenny Casino also paired for fourth place.
