Young Riders set to battle it out in Grand Prix at Sydney Royal
The second competition set down for tomorrow in a big day of Jumping at the Sydney Royal Easter Show is the Young Rider Grand Prix. The Young Riders have been hard at it, competing over the first three days of the show and their competition will reach its conclusion tomorrow. Below is a wrap of the first three days of Young Rider Competition.
The first round of this competition, a speed class, was held on the opening day of the Show. The win went to the rider who finished third in the Young Rider Grand Prix at last year’s show, Anneliese Wansey, this year riding Kolora Stud St Patrick. They had a clear round, finishing in 57.17 seconds, taking the class by a clear margin in excess of three seconds. Second place went to the winning rider of the 2021 Junior Grand Prix, Chloe Versteegen, who combined with Cera Quantero to record a clear round in 60.26 seconds. Third place was claimed by Victorian visitors, Hayden Parker and Tulara Spangenberg, who had a very fast time, but a rail down took their adjusted time to 61.75 seconds.

In Round 2, held on Friday, the win went to Clemency Hughes and Diamond B Corvina in a repeat of their second-round victory at this event last year. They were one of just two clear rounds and despite taking a rail in the jump off, their time of 38.01 seconds was enough to secure the victory. The Round 1 third placegetters Hayden Parker and Tulara Spangenberg, were the other jump off competitors who’s time of 39.81 seconds with one rail down was enough to secure them second place. Claire Zylstra and Harvey B, the combination which just last November were crowned the Australian Junior Champions, had a single rail and a very fast time, to place them in third.

Today’s third round saw the winner of Round 1 repeat that performance. Anneliese Wansey and Kolora Stud St Patrick were the only double clear combination on the day. They were deserved winners as not only were they the only one of six combinations to go clear in the jump off, they were the fastest finishers. In second place once again were the very consistent Victorians, Hayden Parker and Tulara Spangenberg filling a place on the podium for the third day in a row. Third place, also with a single rail in the jump-off, but with a time four seconds slower, was the reigning Australian Young Rider combination and winners the Young Rider Grand Prix last year at the Show, Clemency Hughes and Diamond B Corvina.

Only a small field of 15 combinations will tackle tomorrow’s Young Rider Grand Prix, however, it is set to be a classic. While Clemency Hughes took the title last year, there are a number of Young Riders ready and willing to challenge for the crown. May the best combination win. Good luck to all!
