Wonderful Waratah Show Wraps up in style

Four days of magnificent jumping action drew to a close on Sunday afternoon when the Waratah Showjumping World Cup Show reached its conclusion. Edwena Mitchell sure knows how to organize a show and this was certainly one of her best. Each year this show gets bigger and better and we look forward to seeing how the concept can grow into the future.
The addition of a Trans-Tasman Young Rider Challenge added a new dimension to the show and the World Cup Qualifier was an absolute cracker of a class.
This article concentrates on results from days 3 and 4 of the show. For our full wrap on the Oaks Sport Horses Young Horse Day action, click HERE and for a Day 2 wrap, click HERE.
The action in the indoor arena on Day 3 commenced with the Open division of the 1.35m class. The win in this Stonewall Equestrian sponsored class went to Victorian visitors, Frida Lindgren and the Lever Equestrian owned gelding Van Damme. They came out third in the draw and were one of just 12 clear rounds, stopping the clock at 52.10 seconds. The next 31 combinations tried to catch them, however, nobody was able to. Second place went to a lady who is no stranger to success this weekend, Sarah Duggan. Sarah and her gelding Dublin completed the course in 53.40 seconds to claim second place. Third place also went to Sarah, this time with Oaks Diamantina, (54.49 seconds) in what turned out to be a great show for this combination after they had claimed a pair of wins in Open 1.30m classes on the first two days of the show.
The second class was the JPR Equestrian Young Rider division at 1.35m. The Young Riders put on a great show in this single round class with nine of the 26 starters achieving a clear round over the Mark Atkins designed course. Just as we saw in the Open division of the 1.35 class, the win went to a pair of Victorians, namely Olivia Price and the gelding Le Bam. Their time of 53.27 seconds was just under a second faster than the second placed Anneliese Wansey and another gelding Texas. In third place were the winners of Friday’s Young Rider class Dakota Pinton and Heartline NZ, with a time of 54.47 seconds. The future of Jumping in Australia is in good hands if the quality of these Young Riders is anything to go by.
It was NSW’s turn to take to the top of the podium after the running of the Litt Racing 1.35m Futurity Class. There were 35 combinations entered with just four of them producing clear rounds. First and second in the class went to Tess McInerney, but not in the usual way. Tess McInerney is the listed owner of mare Yalambis Kandy Ripple which was ridden by Aaron Hadlow who went clear in 60.44 seconds to take the win in the class. Tess combined with another of her horses, riding Quintation, to take second place in a time of 62.02 seconds. Aaron Hadlow filled out the podium by finishing in 62.63 seconds combining with gelding Kosmos to do so.

After an extended break where the course designer and his assistants meticulously put together a fantastic World Cup track and the VIP section filled with guests being treated to a sumptuous array of delicious food, all was in readiness for the World Cup. It was a wonderful competition, placing many of the best elements of the sport of jumping on display. For our full wrap on how this competition unfolded, please click HERE.
The evening wrapped up with the Final of the EIAF Trans-Tasman Young Rider Challenge. The Australian Team took out the Series by winning for the third night in a row. For full wrap on this Young Rider Challenge, please click HERE.
The final day of our show opened with the running of the Chatham Park Futurity Class on the Indoor Arena. Conducted over two rounds, the second round was an absolute highlight of the show. It seemed that each combination that came out went slightly better than those before them, seeing the lead change a number of times. In the end there was only 0.13 seconds separating the top three placegetters who were all double clear.
The win, with a second-round time of 43.47 seconds went to Anneliese Wansey and the gelding Texas, seeing them go one better than their second placing in Saturday’s 1.35m Young Rider Class. In second place, stopping the clock at 43.58 seconds, were Tess McInerney and Quintation, making it their third appearance on the podium for the show. In third place, by a mere 0.02 seconds was the combination which were the 6-year-old champions at D&JWTS at Werribee earlier this year, Billy Raymont and his stallion Blue Balou PS.
It was a fantastic class, featuring, no doubt, a number of stars of the future of Australian Jumping.
The second last class of the day was the Riders’ Cup, a class put on by the Riders for the Riders. More than a decade since its inception, this class has been won over the years by some of the best riders around, including Vicki Roycroft, Jamie Kermond and Tom McDermott. The class would not have happened if it wasn’t for the generous support of the following Jumping businesses and people: Birchwood Equestrian, Boree Equine, Diamond B Farm, EMCO Equine, James Mooney Equestrian, Jeir Park, Premier Floats, Long Meadows Stables, Redleaf Lodge, Riverton Equestrian, Tom McDermott and Yandoo Equestrian Services.
Conducted over two rounds, there was only one combination that managed to produce two double clears. We had to wait until the last combination on course to see Phillip Lever and the extravagantly actioned Lomachenko storm around the course to victory. When this combination is on, they are on and today they were on. There were five combinations which had a total of four faults across the two rounds, with Maverick Miles and Verdasco the fastest, claiming second place with a time of 52.32 seconds. Amelia Douglas and her imported gelding Quel Filou 16 were third, some five seconds slower.
The final class on the Indoor program was the Orangeville Performance Horses Young Rider 1.35m class. A total of 24 combinations took to the course which produced six clear rounds, with a jump off needed to sort things out. At the end of the jump off there were still two of the best young riders in the country, who had left all the rails in place. With a time of 36.40 seconds, the win went to Jack Barker and his mare Tulara Colchic. They just pipped Anneliese Wansey out of what would have been her second win of the day. She took second riding Kolora Stud St Patrick, making it a weekend to remember for Anneliese, who was part of the Australian Young Rider which won the Trans-Tasman Challenge earlier in the show. Third place in the class went to the reigning Australian Junior Champions, Claire Zylstra and Harvey B. The Young Riders put on a great show which was much appreciated by the assembled crowd.
Above: Jack Barker and Tulara Colchic.
Special mention should go to Andrew Inglis and mare Indiana Goodtimes. This combination had no less than 5 five wins together over the course of the show, in classes with heights ranging from 1.10m to 1.25m. They only just bettered the efforts of Jasmine Cook and her gelding Sherbet Wizz Fizz, who together dominated Junior classes for four wins in heights ranging from 0.80m to 0.95m.
It was a wonderful show, so well organised and run. No doubt, everybody will be looking forward with great anticipation to the 2024 edition of Waratah Showjumping.
Below are all the placegetters in every class conducted on days 3 and 4 of the show.
