ROUND 3 – LARAPINTA
The Australian World Cup Qualifying Season is one-third complete after the Larapinta Leg held the weekend before last and we have a new rider on top of what is a very congested leader board. It is the Queenslanders showing the way as they currently occupy the top four positions on the table and in fact five of the top six places.
Clem Smith arrived at Larapinta in fifth place on the table and picked up 15 points for his fourth-place finish, taking him to a total of 36 points and into the lead. He is just one point ahead of a tie for second. On 35 points we have Sam Overton, who held the lead going into the third leg but did not add to his tally. He is equal with the winner of the first leg at Shepparton, Mattea Davidson, who picked up 10 points at Larapinta.
As if that is not close enough, just one point further back on 34 points is Gemma Creighton who doubled her previous tally by picking up 17 points for her second place over the weekend.
We have to go down to fifth place to find the first non-Queenslander, Madeline Sinderberry from NSW. She picked up eight points at Larapinta, adding to the 23 she had, placing her now on 31.
The big mover out of the Larapinta Leg was the winner of the Leg, Billy Raymont. Arriving at Larapinta in twelfth spot with just seven points from his first two outings, he picked up the maximum of 20 points for the win, which has seen him leap up into sixth, just nine points off the lead.
With so many great riders vying for the lead, it is going to be fascinating to watch how this competition plays out over the next six legs.
