Touchdown for Tom at Waratah
Above: Tom McDermott and Warraleigh Park Cortez
It was in November last year that Tom McDermott won the second of his two Australian Senior Championship titles and while many things in the world have changed in the past 12 months, one thing that remains constant is his winning form.
Today McDermott took both first and second places in the Tripp Family sponsored Grand Prix at the November edition of Waratah Showjumping. McDermott and Warraleigh Park Cortez were the only combination to clear all the rails twice and were deserved winners. McDermott’s other ride, Yalambis Finnigan saw a fault free and fast second round performance which when coupled with just a single rail in round one was enough to secure second place. James Arkins and WP Grandiamo had a similar performance, however, were just 1.33 seconds slower and had to be satisfied with third.

There was a lovely alignment with McDermott taking out today’s Grand Prix sponsored by the Tripp family. It was back in 2012, when he won his first Australian Senior Title riding the 15-year-old mare, CP Romantic Dream, which was owned by the Tripp family.

Clear rounds were difficult to come by in the first round with only three being recorded by the eventual winners, as well as Josh Collins and the stunning stallion Cornel and Amanda Madigan and Diamond B Vivienne, however, these combinations could not keep clean sheets in the second round and finished in seventh and eighth place respectively. At the presentation ceremony, McDermott echoed the thoughts of all present when he thanked the show organisers and said how good it was to be out jumping at shows again.

The day started out with another two-time Australian Senior Champion taking the honours. David Cameron combined with Bensons Femme Fatale to record back to back clears to win the Keeden Contracting 1.30m-1.35m open class. Filling the placings, each also recording double clears were the Chatham Park based Amber Fuller with Nopal Van Tallaert and Kate Hinschen with Oaks Venquilitrist.

In the Agnes Banks Equine Clinic sponsored Young Rider division of the 1.30m-1.35m, the win went to the Colleen Brook trained Lucie Aldridge riding Ollie Olae again going double clear. The only other combination to achieve this were Clemency Hughes and Diamond B Corvina who were a little more than 2.5 seconds slower in the jump off. A single rail in the jump-off meant that the 2019 NSW Junior Championship pair of Anneliese Wansey and Kolora Stud St Patrick had to settle for third.

The final classes for the day on the main arena were held over 1.20m-1.25m with both open and Junior Divisions. Wansey, this time in combination with the former mount of English rider Elliot Reeves, Aveden Indigo, took out the win in the Junior division. The ACT based pair of Lara Christoffelsz and Bellhaven Catatani were second and with two rails in the jump-off, Jessica Galea and Checka were placed third. The open division, sponsored by HR Forestry was won by the 2019 NSW Senior Champion Jamie Priestley and the interestingly named Team Priestley Leda Ego Z, who recorded double clear rounds. Also going double clear was AJTL rider Izabella Stone on Emanuelson, however, they were just 0.04 seconds slower in the jump off. Third place, with just a single rail in the jump-off went to Jess Stones and Oaks Carmine.
Congratulations to all the winners and placegetters and thank you Edwena Mitchell and her team for organising such a fantastic show.
