Cool and drizzly conditions greeted riders today for the first day of the three-day Arilla Cup show, the traditional warm up for the Pryde’s EasiFeed Australian Jumping Championships, which start next week at Boneo Park. Competition was held across three arenas, with the main classes today being held on Arena 2.

The day started with an even 100 combinations taking on a 1.15m course in an open single round competition. A massive 52 combinations recorded clear rounds and the fastest of these was achieved by Courtney Scott and Quinzella Z with a time of 61.50 seconds. It was a good day for this combination as later in the day, they also took out a 1.10m class on arena 3. Second place in the 1.15m went to Victorian rider James Harvey and Yirrkala Celeste in 62.03 seconds with young Queensland rider Olivia Hewitt-Toms and Lushious Lexie taking third in 62.51 seconds.

The second class of the day saw the rails put up to 1.25m and this time there were more than 100 combinations up for the challenge. Again, there were a large number of clears (46 to be precise) with the fastest achieved by the Queensland based combination of Robert Goodwin and Oaks Costa Rica in 60.97 seconds. Connor Reed combined with the ex-Tom McDermott mount, mare Alpha Activity for second place with a time of 61.38 seconds. They were seven tenths of a second faster than the third placed NSW pair of Jamie Winning-Kermond and Yandoo Honolulu.

The final class of the day on arena 2 was an open 1.35m class, which saw just six of the 30 competing combinations go clear. It was another win for the Queenslanders, with Cody Tincknell, who is still eligible for Junior competitions, combining with the gelding Screwdriver to take the win, with a time of 58.11 seconds. They scrapped in, just ahead of NSW-based Olympian, James Paterson-Robinson riding Dublin in 58.27 seconds, with third place going to another Queensland combination, Chris Holland and Elsa in 58.39 seconds.

It was a great day of jumping, with everybody getting the chance to warm up prior to a range of Championship classes scheduled over the weekend.
