Class 2.38: Gollan Racing – Speed Derby – 1.30m
After nine days of magnificent Jumping action, the Aquis Champions Tour program culminated with the exciting Gollan Racing Speed Derby. Run as a Speed Class, the action was fast and furious from the beginning with competitors striving for a share of the $6,000 prize money.
The first four combinations to attempt the course all took at least one rail to add penalties to their time taken. We had to wait until the fifth out combination of Clem Smith and Guru before we saw a clear round. Smith and Guru who are the reigning Australian Speed champions set a sizzling time of 88.89 seconds to sit comfortably in the lead.
Many combinations tried, but nobody could match Smith’s time. With just two combinations to go, Smith and Guru still sat in the lead. That’s when things became interesting.
Second last to go was Katie Laurie, fresh from her Gold Tour victory, this time riding Cera Caruso. They raced around the course like there was no tomorrow and finished with a clear round. The time? 88.96 seconds, just 0.07 outside Smith’s time. Could Smith and Guru hang on to win?
It wasn’t going to be easy as the last to combination on course was Clint Beresford and SL Donato, who just happen to be the winners of this Aquis Speed Derby last year. Beresford took to the course like a man possessed and although they recorded a clear round, they could not match Smith’s speed and had to settle for third.
These results show how when the competition becomes hot, the cream rises to the top. Amazingly, the top 4 riders in this Speed Derby today, were the top four riders in the same event last year, with three of them combining with the same horse as last year! (Last year Ron Easey rode Simplistic).

PLACE | RIDER | HORSE | $ |

4th | Ron Easey | Port O Call | $550 |
5th | Katie Laurie | Elysium GNZ | $450 |
6th | Rebecca Jenkins | Our Kohinur | $300 |
